Xi Jinping, in his speech, praised Hong Kong's ability to overcome "serious challenges" in recent years, in what appeared to be a veiled reference to the 2019 pro-democracy protests and pressured by Beijing by the imposition of legislation. national security.

 "The last time I was in Hong Kong was five years ago," Xi said in a brief speech after arriving at West Kowloon station. "My heart and the central government's are with my compatriots in Hong Kong," he added. "Facts have shown that the two-system state model has shown great vitality", continued the Chinese president: "In the past two years there has been some turbulence, but the model has been given new life and that is what can ensure long-term prosperity and stability."
