Zelensky predicts his country can win against Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the war in Ukraine can only be resolved through diplomacy. Speaking on national TV, Zelensky predicted his country could win against Russia on the battlefield. However, he added that the war could only end conclusively "at the negotiating table". "Eventually it will be through diplomacy," he told a Ukrainian television channel, as reported by The Guardian. Bloody wars and battles will only end definitively through diplomacy, he said.

"There are things that can only be achieved at the negotiating table," Zelensky said. "We want everything back (as before) but Russia doesn't want that," he said. On Tuesday (17/5/2022), Kyiv's main negotiator Mykhaylo Podolyak said talks with Moscow were "postponed" after taking place regularly in the early stages of the conflict but without any substantial results. The following day Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused the Kyiv authorities of not wanting to resume talks to end hostilities.

"Talks are indeed not moving forward and we note the lack of willingness of the Ukrainian negotiators to continue this process," he said. Russia's Foreign Ministry on Saturday (21/5/2022) released an updated list of the nearly 1,000 Americans permanently barred from entering the country. It became a symbolic slap in response to harsh sanctions imposed by Western countries for its brutal invasion of Ukraine in February. Joe Biden has been barred from visiting Russia since mid-March, as have Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Army General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The latest list of 963 Americans barred from Russia includes Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as Biden's son Hunter Biden, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, and Hillary Clinton, a former secretary of state and first lady. Actor Morgan Freeman and billionaire investor George Soros are also on the list. Soros' philanthropic support for liberal causes, and groups in the former Soviet bloc, has made him a boogeyman for Russia and far-right conspiracy theorists. Jen Psaki, who until this month served as Biden's White House press secretary, tweeted sarcastically about the list Saturday night: “I guess we should cancel a family trip to Moscow in August…” But Trump is not on the list of 963 Americans banned.

For years, Trump has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and criticized the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election that ended in Trump's victory over his Democratic rival, Clinton. On Saturday morning, in an interview with Fox News, Trump complained about the Russia investigation again. "This is one of the biggest political scandals in history," Trump said. "Where do I get my reputation back?" A Trump spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on his omission from Russia's travel ban list. Former President Barack Obama and Trump vice president, Mike Pence, were also not on the list, but Pence's brother, Rep. Greg Pence, R-Ind., banned. So are Greg Pence's 211 Republican colleagues in the House and Senate — along with 224 Democrats from both chambers of congress.

The GOP House members on the banned list include two Republican Trump supporters, Florida's Matt Gaetz and Arizona's Paul Gosar. Also on the list are two Democratic House members whose very progressive policies Trump World hates: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, and Rep. Ilhan Omar from Minnesota. So is House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who this week was also barred from receiving Communion by the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco because of her support for abortion rights. In a statement published by Russia's state news agency RIA, the Foreign Ministry said: "Russia's retaliatory sanctions are coercive and aimed at forcing the incumbent American regime to change its behavior and recognize new geopolitical realities." The ministry also accused the US of trying to impose a neo-colonial rules-based world order around the world.

The ministry said the hostile actions taken by the US government backfired against the United States itself and will continue to receive the refusal it deserves. Russia has also barred entry to hundreds of Canadians, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, and hundreds of members of the British Parliament.
