White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan warns China to avoid helping Russia

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan

Meetings are underway between US national security adviser Jack Sullivan and Yang Jiechi, a member of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission in Rome. Prior to the talks, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan warned China to avoid helping Russia evade Western-imposed sanctions.

China, in turn, accused the United States on Monday of spreading false information. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the "Ukraine situation will definitely be a hot topic" at the meeting, which is scheduled before Russia attacks the country. The White House said talks would focus on the immediate impact of Russia's war against Ukraine on regional and global security.

Sullivan and Yang most recently met for face-to-face talks in Switzerland, where US advisers raised concerns about the Biden administration about China's military provocations against Taiwan, human rights abuses against ethnic minorities and efforts to smother democracy supporters in Hong Kong.
