Atletico Madrid reportedly outperform Manchester United in striker hunt

 Atletico Madrid are reportedly in pole position in the hunt for the services of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez. The 22-year-old has impressed for the Portuguese club throughout the 2021/22 season, scoring 25 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions including 20 goals in 22 league games. 

Nunez still has more than three years on his contract with the Portuguese giants, but the Uruguay international is rumored to be leaving in the summer window. Manchester United also continues to be linked with the transfer of the striker who has a transfer value of around £67 million by his club. 

However, the latest news as reported by Fichajes reveals that Los Rojiblancos are in pole position to secure the services of the South American player, as the reigning La Liga champions are preparing to find replacements for Luis Suarez and Joao Felix this summer. 

Nunez has scored 40 goals and contributed 14 assists in 77 appearances for Benfica since joining the Portuguese club from Almeria in September 2020. Previously, Diego Simeone's team signed Benfica's young star player in 2019 when they brought in Joao Felix, whose transfer fee was record-breaking. club and to this day he is still Atleti's most expensive signing.
